My Approach

I take a holistic approach to cancer care, focusing specifically on prostate cancer. I tell patients that I have not always been a doctor. Coming from a small town, I believe that hard work, dedication, and respect are primary indicators of a successful relationship. My role is to be a teammate and assist my patients on the sometimes long and difficult journey of cancer monitoring or treatment. One of the first feelings a patient may experience when they are told they have cancer is a loss of control. My approach is to hand the keys back to the patient. I usually describe their journey as a ride—you're driving the bus, and our team has the expertise to show you the maps. We can add people onto the bus (consultants) and let others off when they are no longer needed, but we always want you to maintain primary control in the discussion. We also incorporate genetics, diet and newer techniques such as the microbiome whenever possible.

Prostate Cancer Research

Research

Exciting advancements in cancer care are driven by research, and I truly believe that precision medicine is the future! Precision medicine is personalized and recognizes your unique genetics, lifestyle, and circumstances. We're just scratching the surface of what medicine can achieve. Being part of the Moores Cancer Center opens the door to groundbreaking clinical trials. You can get involved in research by simply submitting a blood test or allowing the use of your surgical tissue. Join us in pioneering early clinical studies featuring innovative drugs, vaccines, and natural products led by Dr. Liss and his fantastic team! Plus, we offer the chance to participate in National Cancer Institute-approved trials through the National Clinical Trials Network, including SWOG, ECOG, and Alliance—all designed to revolutionize the standard of care!

Individualized Care

I always try to individualize your care and typically present the situation:

Every cancer is different - (aggressiveness and spread)

Every patient is different - (risks and benefits, experience, family)

We can provide a personalized assessment of your cancer risks using specialized risk calculators and algorithms that Dr. Liss himself has contributed to developeing. He uses biomarkers that can use urine, blood, or tissue but should be taylored to your unique situation. We can discuss whether additional testing is needed such as new genomic testing or risk stratification testing. If you have been diagnosed with cancer, we can offer a second opinion and assess whether additional testing or imaging is required. We can provide personalized discussions tailored to your history and concerns.
