About Dr. Liss
Michael A. Liss M.D., M.A.S., F.A.C.S. is a urologic oncologist and Associate professor at the University of Texas Health San Antonio. He graduated magna cum laude (BS in Biology) from Benedictine University in Illinois, received his medical degree with honors in research from the Medical College of Wisconsin.
He then completed his urology residency at the University of California Irvine under world-renowned laparoscopic and robotic surgeons. He completed specialized surgical urologic oncology and research training at the University of California San Diego. The additional training has led him to become one of the very few urologists that have completed a Society of Urologic Oncology-approved urologic oncology fellowship with a practice in San Antonio and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. His surgical skills include robotic and traditional open surgical procedures. His training allows him to be able to choose a patient-specific approach to surgical resection.
Additionally, he completed a Masters Degree in Applied Science with a focus in Clinical Research to acquire the knowledge to design and implement cutting edge clinical trials. He was selected as the principal investigator of SWOG (formerly Southwest Oncology Group), which is a partner in the National Cancer Institute National Clinical Trials Network. In this capacity, he works with oncologists at UT Health Cancer Center to open the newest clinical trials here in San Antonio to include the Veterans Affairs Medical Center. He won Clinical Investigator of the Year 2017 for the UT Health Cancer Center. He also is the Director of Clinical Research at University Hospital. His primary research interests include incorporating imaging and biomarker translational research into interventional clinical trials.
